Plat99
The centerpiece of The Alexander’s art program is Plat 99, a second-floor mixology barlounge designed by the MacArthur “genius” award-winning artist Jorge Pardo. Named for the hotel’s site in the Ralston plan, Plat 99 was conceived by Pardo as an immersive environment, with a dynamic lighting design, furniture, and surface treatments created by his studio. The floors and columns of Plat 99 are enlivened by an intricate, gradated pattern of painted concrete block tiles that were handmade in Veracruz, Mexico by artisans working with Pardo and his Los Angeles-based studio. The tile motif served as inspiration for the bar face and metal screens. The space also includes 99 lamps in vibrant yellow, orange, red, blue, purple, and green hues, which have been hand-molded into a variety of imaginative shapes. An additional 21 pendant lamps designed by Pardo are suspended above the hotel’s grand staircase, luring ground-floor visitors into the lobby and bar upstairs. Plat 99 is the only bar that the Pardo studio has designed in the United States outside of Los Angeles and the first bar that the studio has ever designed for a hotel. (Los Angeles, CA)
